Michael Steeber: Apple: We Have No Plans To Bring Siri To Older Devices

michaelsteeber:

Apple has allegedly given the official word that Siri will not be coming to older iOS devices, at least not any time soon. I received word yesterday from someone who contacted Apple with a bug report, suggesting an optional build of iOS with Siri included, available as a paid upgrade.

It’s a nice idea, but this is about up-selling newer, more profitable hardware. Getting a 3GS or 4 customer to go and buy a new 4S is worth more to Apple and their entire supply chain than selling an upgrade of the software that supports those features.

Also, I don’t believe the “engineering feedback” bit. As many know, before Apple bought the company, Siri worked on the 3G, 3GS, and iPhone 4. Granted the new version is much improved by way of tight OS-level integration and more functionality, but it’s not like it couldn’t work on older hardware. They just don’t want it too because they want you to buy a new phone.
